May 19, 2017 at the Institute of USA and Canada RAS was the annual scientific conference “Arbatov Readings”, which has already become traditional in ISKRAN and received its name in memory of the founder of the Institute and the founder of the scientific school of American studies in Russia – Academician George Arkadievich Arbatov. This year’s conference is a jubilee, as it opened a series of events dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Institute. The agenda for the conference consisted of two meetings, the first of which was called “ISCRAN – half a century of success” and was devoted to the memorable pages of the history of the Institute. In the course of the second meeting – “The First Steps of the Administration of D. Trump” – the urgent problems of American studies were discussed, and the key aspects at the moment are the decisions of the new US administration on US economic, domestic, foreign and military policy. The conference was attended by the “elders” of the Institute – employees who spent a lifetime working in ISKRAN and devoted all these years to the study of American studies, as well as representatives of the younger generation of scientists who came to the Institute in the new millennium. Among the invited guests who participated in the conference were long-time colleagues, friends and associates of the Institute from the Russian Academy of Sciences, the expert community, as well as former members of ISCRAN, who have maintained contact with our team for many years.
